Delmarva Rail, Part 3

Wednesday will be Part 3 of the Chesapeake Forum course Tracks Through Time, The History of Delmarva’s Railroads.

During our time in Part 2 we covered the basics of how late 19th century railroads operated, the development of several branch lines such as the Maryland & Delaware (1867), Dorchester & Delaware, Wicomico & Pokomoke, and Queen Anne’s and Kent Railroads, we spoke about railroad tycoons, the gilded age and the the consolidations of many roads under the PW&B and NYP&N umbrellas.

This week, we start with a pair of east-west railroads late to the scene, we discuss what passengers and freight are moving by rail, more consolidations, the nationalization of the railroads during World War One, highways, depressions, abandonments, mergers, bankruptcies and more.
