Delmarva Rail, Part 2
Tomorrow begins Part 2 of the Chesapeake Forum course Tracks Through Time, The History of Delmarva’s Railroads.
During our time last week we covered the difficulties of transportation in early America, compared maritime and overland travel methods, looked at early railroad equipment, discussed the dangers and accidents possible with early railroads, and the rivalries between Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
This week, we start with the conclusion of the US Civil War, and we will take a closer look at how railroad technology matured and how trains operated in addition to diving into the construction of several branch lines to Queen Annes County, Kent County, Talbot County and Dorchester County. We will wrap up with the dawn of the regulatory age, and look at whom and what was moving by rail just prior to World War One.
I look forward to seeing everyone!
