Tracks Through Time

Rail transportation helped shape life on Marylands Eastern Shore, and has left a legacy in many of our communities. May 6-27th, the Chesapeake Forum will be hosting a 4-part course on the history of Delmarva’s railroads, hosted by Tom Mackay of Last Mile Rail Strategies.

While less than half of all railroads built on Delmarva remain, those that do serve a critical need for local economic development. Towns like Ridgely, Sudlersville, Hurlock and Preston we founded with the building of the railroad, while others, like Denton, Easton, Queenstown and Cambridge combined the advantages of water and rail transportation. This course starts at the beginning of rail development, almost 200 years ago, and outlines the places and events that created a regional rail transportation system. Along the way we will learn more about how railroads work, who they serve, and what the future holds.

I look forward to seeing you!
